The Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) National Cemetery Administration and Keeper Memorials announced a historic milestone for the Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) project as it honors 9.8 million veterans, a substantial increase from the 4.8 million who were memorialized earlier in 2023.

VLM is an online memorial platform that honors those interred in VA national cemeteries; VA grant-­funded cemeteries; Department of Defense-managed cemeteries; U.S. Park Service national cemeteries; and, now, thousands of private cemeteries where veterans received a VA-provided gravesite marker since 1996.

The additional five million memorialized veterans, and their respective memorial pages, include more than 4,000 veterans interred in 87 foreign countries and more than 80,000 laid to rest in a state, tribal or territory veterans cemetery.

The VLM application and its storytelling features exceed the static online obituaries used by funeral homes to share information about the recently deceased. Veterans Legacy Memorial utilizes Keeper Memorial’s interactive platform to tell a veteran’s life story and share it with the world.
