Funeral Service Organizations

There are a variety of funeral service organizations in the United States and round the world that offer scholarships, including:

Fifty to sixty $500 - $2,500 scholarships available annually from various donor organizations. Administered by the ABFSE Scholarship Committee which meets in April and October. Applicants must have completed at least one term of study in a funeral service program accredited by ABFSE. Taken into careful consideration are financial need, academic performance, extracurricular and/or community activities, recommendations submitted and articulateness of the scholarship application itself.

A $1,000 scholarship is available. Available to any funeral service student in his/her last year of study or last apprentice year; essay of not less than 2,000 words; and subject related to funeral service and/or the practice of thanatology.

Since 1945 the Funeral Service Foundation has fueled the careers of more than 6,000 funeral service professionals through academic scholarships and professional development initiatives. Whether you are beginning your career in funeral service or seeking quality professional development opportunities, the Foundation’s scholarship programs are designed to help you help you reach your educational and career goals.

The Foundation currently administers and awards academic scholarships to full- and part-time students enrolled in ABFSE-Accredited institutions, funds the Meet the Mentors program, and offers professional development scholarships to women to attend the annual Professional Women’s Conference.

Scholarships with amounts depending upon monies contributed. Applicant must be a mortuary science major, entering his/her final year of study, have maintained a "B" grade average in mortuary science courses, been involved in school and community service activities and must demonstrate excellence in the pursuit of knowledge in mortuary science.

One $500, 1,000, $1,500 scholarships. Open to all mortuary science students. Scholarships are awarded through an annual essay contest. Topic is announced every year immediately after Thanksgiving.

Scholarships vary. Eligibility for the award, student must have completed at least one of the last three quarters as a full-time student in a program of Mortuary Science education or funeral service accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education. Have demonstrated responsibility with a good attendance record and minimum grade point average of 2.5 on  a 4.0 scale. Have demonstrated qualities of professionalism which are needed for success in funeral service. Be a citizen of the United States. Applications must be received by the committee by June 30 of each year. Applicants submitting late or incomplete applications will be eliminated from the competition.
